Canada increases community flood mitigation projects in attempts to prevent future disasters

 Disaster

According to the government of Alberta website, the Alberta Community Resilience Program (ACRP) will support 21 projects in 16 different municipalities to erect protections against future flooding issues. Some of these protections include:

  • Construction and expansion of dry ponds
  • Erosion control for areas on the banks of rivers and other bodies of water
  • Flood barriers
  • Improved water management infrastructures.

Many of the areas receiving assistance were affected during the 2013 floods including Calgary and Lethbridge County. In Calgary, four projects have been approved including:

  • A permanent flood barrier for the SE Heritage Drive
  • Flood gates for priority storm water outfalls
  • Elevated hoists for the Glenmore Dam
  • Lower deck floor barrier improvements for the Centre Street Bridge.

The ACRP 2015 budget is part of a 10-year plan of $500 million in grant support for overall district improvements, multiple municipalities, special areas, First Nations and Métis Settlements. If areas did not receive the funding they asked for, or the full amount requested, the next submissions for ACRP are due September 30, 2015. Flash floods can happen in a matter of seconds, regardless of the nearby water depth. If a flash flood occurs, remember the following three tips:

  • Never drive through flood areas: Water depth can be deceiving, and your car can become stuck or swept away. If you do drive through and your car stalls, immediately leave the car and get to a safe location.
  • If you are on foot, fast water can sweep you away quickly. Never attempt to pass water and avoid crossing bridges if the water is high and rushing quickly.
  • Vacate your home or other area if asked to do so by local emergency authorities. Be sure you have a personal emergency plan for your family and pets.
