Car Insurance in Edmonton

With a population of over 1.2 million people, driving in Edmonton, Alberta, the province’s capital city, can be challenging, especially with winter weather. Westland Insurance brokers work closely with their clients to ensure Edmonton residents have the best auto insurance coverage to suit their needs. In some cases, people can save up to $800 annually.

The city’s Transportation Services department regularly works on plans to reduce traffic congestion and collisions while promoting efficient, sustainable ways to travel. But with an area covering over 9,418 square kilometres, it is not surprising accidents can occur.

Insurance requirements

As with all areas of the province, if you drive a private passenger vehicle in Edmonton you are required to carry a minimum insurance policy of $200,000 Third Party Liability and Accident Benefits. Ninety-eight percent of drivers carry $1,000,000 in coverage.

Exchanging a licence from another province

Canadians are often mobile in their lifestyles and it is imperative that you update your licence promptly when permanently changing residences.

You must exchange your current license for an Alberta license of equal class within 90 days of moving to the province. This requirement applies even if you travel outside Alberta within that time frame.

A driver’s test is not required unless you are in a Graduated Licensing Program.

Proactive safe driving

If you want to ensure you are doing your best at driving on the province’s roads, the CAA offers a number of tips to stay safe:

Distracted driving: This is one of the largest unreported problems facing Canadians on the road today. Data suggests that 8 out of every 10 collisions are caused by driver distractions. To stay safe:

  • Eat or drink before you get in the car.
  • Turn off your cell phone or put it away.
  • Finish personal grooming before you leave home.
  • Prepare children for the trip.

Impaired driving: What was once a term primarily connected with alcohol consumption, impaired is now linked to prescription or illegal drugs. Within the scope of CAA’s public education, they want to make sure impaired driving in all forms is at the forefront of Canadians attention.

Alberta vehicle inspection program

To ensure drivers are not endangering themselves or others on the road, the Alberta Transportation Vehicle Inspection Program identifies and removes unsafe vehicles from the road to prevent collisions that may result in injury or death.

When you move to Alberta from another province your vehicle is required to undergo a safety inspection. If repairs are needed, the vehicle must again go through an inspection before registration can be completed.
