SURREY, BC – The Surrey School District 36 and the YMCA of Greater Vancouver launch Clubhouse 36 with the support of Westland Insurance Group Ltd.

Clubhouse 36 is an out-of-school program designed to provide consistent, connected and professionally-operated programing for at-risk and vulnerable Surrey youth aged 6 to 12 who are identified by school-based staff. The program aims to build the self-esteem and confidence of students through social, emotional, life, sport, art, leadership and academic learning in a structured out-of-school environment.  Clubhouse 36 was piloted at three Surrey elementary schools July of 2015 and will continue to offer activities to students during the 2015-2016 school year, spring break and summer breaks. The program is offered free of charge to identified students.

The Surrey School District is currently the largest school district in British Columbia with 126 schools and more than 70 000 students. “Our board is dedicated to providing every opportunity for students to shine; to ensuring obstacles to learning and success are removed,” says Shawn Wilson, Surrey School Board of Education chairperson. “It is heartening to see the community coming together for families, and we are very grateful for the vision and generosity of the Sedin Family Foundation and for donors like Westland Insurance, who are providing significant support for those students who face the most obstacles.”

Westland Insurance has put significant effort into engaging staff as volunteers in the Surrey schools. With Westland’s support, one school that previously was unable to run breakfast every day because of lack of volunteers will likely be able to begin operations full time this year. Engaging staff is working very well so far and schools are thrilled to be connecting with several Westland staff.  Westland Insurance has also committed to assist Clubhouse 36 financially for at least 5 years.

“We are proud to support the Surrey School District and Clubhouse 36,” says Jason Wubs, Westland Insurance President and CEO. “We thank the Surrey School of District and YMCA for providing Westland with this opportunity to contribute in the communities in which we serve.  Additionally, it provides a platform for our staff to get involved and be engaged in their communities. It is wonderful to see the success of Clubhouse 36 in such a short time period and the impact it is making on the students’ lives”.
