Motorcycle insurance for Saskatchewan riders and seasonal road risks

Motorcycles come with different coverage needs than everyday vehicles, especially when they are ridden seasonally, stored for part of the year, customized, or used for weekend trips. Saskatchewan riders may need to review SGI coverage, deductibles, liability limits, collision, comprehensive, theft, accessories, storage, and coverage options that fit how often they ride.

The right motorcycle insurance depends on your bike, riding habits, storage setup, budget, and the level of protection you want on and off the road. Westland helps Saskatchewan riders understand coverage options and choose protection that fits their motorcycle and riding season.

Who needs to buy motorcycle insurance?

If you drive a motorcycle, moped or scooter on any public roadway, you will need to insure your motorcycle, aside from power assisted or e-bikes which don’t need to be licensed. The actual definition of a motorcycle, other than sweet, beauty, beastlike, or just plain cool, is as follows:

  • Can be two tandem or three wheels
  • Engine size is over 50cc’s
  • Includes mopeds and scooters

What’s included in basic SGI motorcycle insurance?

The basic motorcycle policy provides insurance protection for bodily injury in the event of an accident. There are three types of injury insurance to choose from:

  • No Fault Coverage
  • Tort Coverage
  • Reduced No Fault Injury Coverage

The insurance rate for each option depends on the make and model of the motorcycle, and your Safe Driver Recognition program rating.

All drivers and non-drivers are automatically covered with No Fault Coverage unless they have chosen Tort or Reduced No Fault and file a declaration form.

What’s injury insurance and why is it important?

Injuries can happen on the road, whether in your control or not. If the unexpected happens, injury insurance will take care of at least some of the financial aspects of an injury. Whether it fully covers the financial implications and expenses that come with an injury, or just partial, it’s an important aspect to every motorcyclist’s policy. It’s important to note that accident benefits and injury payments aren’t included on auto extension policies in Saskatchewan, only on the plate insurance.

What coverages are available under each injury insurance option?

This is the most comprehensive option as it encompasses most expenses that can occur due to an injury. This kicks in if there is injury resulting from an accident, regardless of who is at fault. Coverages include:

  • Medical Expenses
  • Rehabilitation
  • Personal Expenses
  • Living Assistance
  • Travel Expenses
  • Death Benefits
  • Permanent Impairment Payment

This coverage is definitely not as robust as no fault and requires a declaration form to be completed. It provides coverage for the most basic benefits that will cover expenses. With tort coverage, you have the option to sue for expenses that aren’t covered in the event of injury, as well as for pain and suffering. Coverages under tort include:

  • Medical Expenses
  • Rehabilitation
  • Income Benefit
  • Death Benefits
  • Permanent Impairment Payment

With both no fault and tort there are exceptions to coverage, connect with us today to explore both options and find what is the best fit for you.

Do you currently have no fault coverage, but think that you could do with fewer injury benefits? Reduced no fault injury coverage could be for you. It features the same benefits as benefits as the tort injury coverage but also leaves a limited ability to be able to sue for any additional losses that may occur. The benefit to this coverage is that it comes with a reduction in premium by 20-30% but still ensures that you’re covered while out on the road.
