Staying longer than planned? How to extend your travel insurance.
There’s a reason snowbirds head south each year to enjoy sunshine, golf courses, beaches, and avoid the cold winter months. And sometimes, the hardest part is heading home. Maybe the weather back north hasn’t warmed up yet, or you’ve decided to enjoy a few more rounds of golf before packing up.
If your plans change and you’re staying longer than expected, there’s one important detail to keep in mind: your travel insurance. Extending your stay is easy, but only if your coverage stays up to date.
Check your coverage dates
Every travel insurance policy comes with clear start and end dates. If you extend your trip, even by a few days, your coverage might not automatically extend with it. That means a simple decision to stay a little longer could leave you without protection for medical emergencies, trip interruptions, or lost baggage.
To avoid a gap, contact your insurance advisor before your policy expires. In most cases, your insurer will allow you to extend your coverage while you’re still away, if there are no pending claims or changes in your health since you left.
Pro tip: Don’t wait until the last day of coverage to reach out. Give yourself a few days’ buffer to make any necessary updates or payments.
Understand your coverage limits
f your travel insurance comes through a credit card or group plan, check how long you’re covered as some plans limit trips to 15, 30, or 60 days. Many snowbirds are surprised to find that their “built-in” coverage runs out well before their winter stay ends.
Most travel insurance offered by credit card or group plan policies also have age limits. Our travel policies can cover you well past the age limits on most other plans.
Why extending coverage matters
Without continuous travel insurance, even one uncovered day can leave you at risk. Medical costs abroad can reach thousands of dollars for a single emergency visit. Extending your policy ensures you’re still protected, no matter how long you decide to stay.
And while the weather might be beautiful where you are, winter conditions could delay or even cancel your flights home. Extending your coverage to include these extra days may be necessary.
It also provides peace of mind for friends and family back home, knowing that if something unexpected happens, you’ll have support ready when you need it.
Recently, a client called to extend their policy. Their flights were delayed by a few days and at first, they didn’t think they needed to extend the policy but thought they would call to find out the cost. The client ended up purchasing the extension on their policy and it is a very good thing they did as they suffered an injury as they were leaving the resort. The extension of their travel policy really helped to save the client from having to pay for this expense.
