Plate insurance in Saskatchewan, explained
In Saskatchewan, auto insurance comes in two parts – your mandatory basic plate insurance, and extension auto insurance coverage options.
Basic plate insurance, provided by SGI, is mandatory coverage for all vehicles in Saskatchewan. It offers financial protection for:
- Physical damage to your vehicle
- Third Party Liability which provides coverage for damage to property, other vehicles, and injury to others
- Injuries resulting from a vehicle collision
Plate insurance
In Saskatchewan, your basic plate insurance coverage offers two options: no-fault coverage and tort coverage. Each option has its exceptions. Contact us today to explore both and determine the best fit for your needs.
This option is the most comprehensive option available since it provides coverage for injury due to collision. Regardless of who is at fault of the accident, the coverage will kick in. The no fault option includes the following benefits:
- Medical Expenses
- Rehabilitation
- Personal Expenses
- Travel Expenses
- Death Benefits
- Living Assistance
- Permanent Impairment Payment
A declaration form must be completed to obtain this coverage. Under this coverage, the most basic benefits are available to help cover expenses. You have the ability to sue for expenses with this coverage for those that aren’t covered when an injury occurs, in addition to pain and suffering. Coverages under tort include:
- Medical Expenses
- Rehabilitation
- Income Benefit
- Death Benefits
- Permanent Impairment Payment
Another aspect of your license plate insurance policy is third-party liability. Essentially, it protects you against injury or property damage you might cause, as well as vehicle damage, whether you’re in Canada or the United States. Saskatchewan’s plate insurance offers basic coverage of $200,000, meeting only the minimum legal standards for liability and essential insurance benefits which hasn’t been updated since 1985!
Extension coverage
To enhance your basic plate coverage, we offer additional coverages that can create a more comprehensive car insurance policy. This provides extra protection for total peace of mind while you’re on the road.
This coverage protects against damage when your vehicle collides with another object, such as another vehicle, building, guardrail, or roadway. It also includes coverage for rollovers.
Found yourself stuck in a hailstorm? Hit a deer? Windstorm? Vehicle stolen or vandalized? This will cover your damages.
This is the best of both worlds by combining the coverage of both collision and comprehensive.
Is the standard third-party liability limit sufficient if the unexpected occurs? With this option, you can increase your liability limit to ensure you have complete coverage from a liability standpoint.
Extension auto insurance offers deductible options that allow you to choose a lower deductible if you need to file a claim.
Family security coverage protects your family members by providing compensation if they are injured by an uninsured or underinsured driver, up to your liability amount, with a maximum of $2 million.
For losses due to wildlife, fire, lightning, and theft of the entire vehicle, there is zero deductible when you have purchased both collision and comprehensive deductibles, along with third-party liability on your auto policy.
If you’re unable to return to work for a period of time, an auto policy provides an additional amount on top of the weekly income benefit covered by the basic injury insurance.
An auto policy automatically provides coverage at no additional cost for you, your spouse, and the children in your care while driving a vehicle you don’t own.
These aren’t included in plate insurance. Snowmobiles are also not covered under homeowner insurance.
Covers the cost of replacing glass that encloses the passenger compartment of your vehicle, if it is broken by an object thrown or fallen from another vehicle.
If your vehicle is stolen or vandalized, it provides funds to rent a vehicle.
Offers replacement of your vehicle at no depreciation if your new vehicle is totaled due to a covered event.
Provides coverage while your vehicle is in continuous storage or undergoing restoration.

Everything to know about your deductible
Plate insurance in Saskatchewan protects you and your vehicle in the event of a claim, but you’ll usually have to pay a deductible before that coverage kicks in. Not sure what a deductible is, and how much yours should be? Here’s what you need to know about deductibles to ensure you’re properly covered!
In the event of damage or theft of your vehicle, a deductible is an amount that you must pay before your plate insurance kicks in to cover the rest. For instance, if you get into a fender bender that results in $1,500 worth in damages to your vehicle and you have a $700 deductible, you’ll pay that $700, and plate insurance will cover the rest.
Your deductible applies whenever you file a claim or have a claim filed against you by another insured driver. This includes paying your deductible for windshield replacement or for significant car damage. There are specific circumstances where a deductible is required, particularly with plate insurance or extension auto policies.
If you’re in an accident with another insured driver who is determined to be at fault, you will not be responsible for paying the deductible. However, you may still need to cover the deductible if the at-fault driver is uninsured.
