RV insurance for Alberta road trips, storage, and seasonal risks
RVs can be exposed to different risks depending on how they are used, stored, driven, or parked for the season. Alberta RV owners may need coverage for motorhomes, travel trailers, campers, liability claims, collision damage, theft, weather damage, personal belongings, attached equipment, and time spent at campsites or on the road.
The right RV insurance depends on the type of RV, where it travels, how often it is used, whether it is stored seasonally, and what property or equipment is kept inside. Westland helps Alberta RV owners compare coverage options, understand limits and exclusions, and choose protection that fits their vehicle, travel plans, and budget.

Who needs to buy RV insurance?
If you have a house or cabin trailer, tent trailer, or motorhome, you’ll need to insure your RV. These days, RV’s can look like home luxury living to mobile tent pop-ups. Even if your RV doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, you need the right RV insurance to cover your investment. Keep those RV adventures coming with peace of mind knowing you have the right coverage packed.
What type of RV insurance do you need?
RV’s with an engine require the same third party liability and accident benefits as a car when out on the road. Physical damage coverage to protect your RV while on the road as well as at the campground, contents coverage plus premise liability coverage while parked are additional considerations. RV insurance coverage often offers replacement value of the motorhome, not just the actual (current) value.
As travel and fifth-wheel trailers don’t have a motor, the third-party liability extends from the auto policy while being towed. Physical damage coverage for your RV and contents such as collision, fire, theft and hail are not extended from the towing vehicle so additional coverage is required. If you lease a seasonal lot, you also need premises liability coverage.
What’s usually covered in a stand-alone RV policy?
Unlike typical auto or home insurance, trailer policies can offer additional coverage for emergencies while using the vehicle. For example, suppose your motorhome is damaged and unusable while you were camping. In that case, the policy can offer coverage for you to stay in a hotel until you can have the unit repaired or make the necessary arrangements to get back home. A stand-alone policy can also provide more coverage for the contents you keep in the RV. If you have a fancy new 5th wheel with a flat-screen TV and space for gaming consoles, that will need to be considered when looking at what policy is right for you.
What does RV insurance cost?
There are lots of factors that determine the cost of insuring your RV. The main element is the value of the RV. Some are more of an investment than others, and rightfully so, you’ll pay a difference in premium to reflect that.

Claims Example
Damages to awnings are a common claim we see when it comes to RV’s. For example, winds can pick up quickly and rip off the awning. This can cause upwards of $1,500 to $4,000 worth of damage. The right RV insurance policy will help mitigate these risks and get you back to your normal as quickly as possible.
