How Car Insurance in Aurora Works

In Aurora, Ontario, auto insurance is required by law and driving without it can result in serious fines and penalties. The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRAO) oversees and regulates auto insurance throughout the province, ensuring that Ontarians receive a comprehensive range of coverage options at a fair price point.

While the province of Ontario mandates that certain types of coverage must be included in every policy (see Mandatory Coverage below), car insurance is privatized in Aurora. This means that vehicle owners have the opportunity to shop around for the best policy to meet their needs, including their budgetary requirements. Taking the time to compare quotes from a variety of different insurance providers can result in substantial savings.

Car insurance in Ontario operates on a no-fault model. This means that drivers deal with claims directly through their own insurance company, no matter whether or not they’re deemed at fault in a collision.

The following four types of coverage must be included in every insurance policy sold in the province of Ontario:

  • Third-Party Liability
    • Third-party liability coverage protects you in the event that you cause injury or property damage while driving. It covers expenses such as medical and legal fees. Ontario drivers must carry a minimum of $200,000 of third-party liability coverage, though many drivers choose to increase their coverage to $1 million or $2 million.
  • Accident Benefits
    • Accident benefits insurance covers costs associated with your personal medical expenses, lost wages, and more if you’re in a car accident. This type of insurance is accessible no matter who was at fault in the collision.
  • Uninsured Automobile Insurance
    • In an ideal world, all drivers would carry enough insurance. But sometimes, a collision occurs when a driver is underinsured or uninsured (which is illegal). Under these circumstances, your uninsured automobile coverage will cover expenses up to the amount outlined in your policy. Uninsured automobile insurance also provides coverage in the event that you’re the victim of a hit-and-run.
  • Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD)
    • If you’re not at fault in a collision, DCPD covers the cost of repairs to your vehicle up to the amount outlined in your policy.

There are many types of enhanced automobile coverage that go beyond the minimum in Ontario. Some of the most common types are:

  • Collision Coverage
    • Even if you’re at fault in an accident, collision coverage covers repairs to your vehicle up to the amount specified in your policy.
  • Specified Perils Coverage
    • Not all damages to your vehicle are caused by collisions. Specified perils coverage protects you in the event that your car is damaged by listed perils such as hail, fire, flooding, or riots.
  • Comprehensive Coverage
    • Comprehensive coverage is similar to specified perils coverage except that it covers more perils (it usually includes a list of exclusions rather than inclusions, meaning that all unlisted perils are covered).
  • All Perils
    • If you want the broadest type of enhanced coverage, all perils will be your best option. It combines specified and all perils coverage while also protecting you in the event that your car is stolen by an employee or household member.

Ontario’s provincial annual average for car insurance is  approximately $1.500, meaning that Aurora’s rates are just slightly above average. They’re similar to the rates in surrounding towns and lower than those in cities like Vaughan and Ajax.
