RV Insurance In Calgary
If you get the opportunity to explore Alberta, don’t pass it up. Just outside of Calgary, you’ll find plenty of places to explore, from beautiful Banff to the Rocky Mountains. Summer only lasts so long, and adventure awaits you. But before you embark on your journey, make sure you have Calgary RV insurance.
You’re familiar with most aspects of trip planning, from stockpiling snacks to navigating your route. But what about choosing an insurance policy?
Trying to find the right coverage for your motorhome or travel trailer can be tricky. At Westland Insurance, we’re here to help with that. Discover the peace of mind that RV insurance offers.
What Does RV Insurance Cover?
If you’re involved in an accident, or your vehicle is broken into, how much will your insurance company cover? Understanding the limitations of your policy is important; that way, you can identify the right coverage for your next trip.
Trailer change this to RV insurance is a bit different than your standard auto insurance policy. It offers additional protection for your unique needs. A stand-alone RV insurance policy includes the following:
If you cause an accident, your vehicle could damage another person’s property or cause bodily injuries. This policy may cover the repair costs and medical expenses.
Do you live in a motorhome? If so, you may not know where to go while your RV is being repaired. Your insurance company may cover the cost of alternative living arrangements while your vehicle is uninhabitable, including hotel stays and takeout meals.
You store all sorts of things inside your motorhome, from entertainment units to hiking gear. If you’re underinsured, you may not receive the coverage you need after your belongings are stolen or damaged. That’s why it’s important to choose an RV insurance policy with a coverage limit that matches the value of your belongings.
What Doesn’t It Cover?
What sorts of incidents will fall outside your coverage? Additional policies aren’t included with your standard RV insurance; you’ll need to pay extra for things like roadside assistance, and extended coverage limits.
Depending on the type of RV you drive, different policies will be more or less suited to your needs. You don’t want to make a claim and then find out you’ve got the wrong policy for your vehicle. There are different coverages based on the class of RV that you have – whether it is a bumper pull trailer, tent trailer or an A, B or C Class motorhome.
Worried that you’re underinsured? If you’re seeking additional insurance products, we can help. One of our RV insurance brokers can help you find more comprehensive coverage.
How Much Does RV Insurance Cost?
You’re trying to estimate the cost of your tent trailer or motorhome insurance. This is what factors into the cost of your trailer insurance:
- Value of your RV. If your vehicle is damaged beyond repair, your insurance company may pay you a guaranteed replacement cost. But how much is your vehicle worth? If you drive a vehicle with a higher replacement cost, you’ll need to pay higher premiums to account for that.
- Claims history. Each time you make an insurance claim, the cost of your RV insurance goes up. In some scenarios, it might be more cost-effective to pay for repairs rather than higher insurance premiums.
- Your deductible. Premiums are paid annually or monthly; they keep your policy active. On the other hand, the deductible is what you pay the insurance company before they’ll reimburse you for a claim. You can pay lower monthly premiums by increasing your deductible.

How can I receive additional discounts on my insurance?
Depending on which insurance company you work with, you may be eligible for different discounts. You can potentially save on your insurance with the following:
- Good driving record. If you’ve never been involved in an accident, insurance companies may offer you a discount.
- Claims-free history. Fewer insurance claims mean that you’ll pay lower monthly premiums.
- Mature customer discount. If you’re above a certain age, you may be eligible for a mature discount.
Who Needs To Buy RV Insurance?
From affordable motorhomes to luxury trailers, all types of RVs need insurance. Driving a motorhome type RV without insurance isn’t just unsafe—it’s also illegal. In Alberta, it’s illegal to drive without insurance. At the bare minimum, you need accident benefits and third-party liability coverage; other insurance products are optional but recommended.
Your car insurance does not offer the same coverage as motorhome or trailer insurance. If you drive an RV, you need a policy that’s tailored to your insurance needs. Here are a few things to consider:
Since you drive your motorhome along major Alberta roads, it requires insurance just like a regular vehicle. But you probably use it a bit differently than you would a car or truck.
You need premise liability coverage to protect your motorhome while it’s parked. Motorhome insurance protects your vehicle while it’s stored on a campground or the road.
If you use a travel trailer or a fifth-wheel trailer, you need additional coverage to protect your RV and its contents. Your auto insurance policy will cover the trailer as it is being towed (since it doesn’t have a motor).
However, you can’t rely on your auto policy for total coverage. To protect your fifth-wheel trailer and its contents from physical damage, you need additional coverage. Things like collision, hail, fire, or theft coverage from your auto insurance policy will not extend to your towing vehicle. That’s why you need insurance for travel trailers.
Claims Example
Your motorhome or travel trailer is always exposed to the elements. Nature can take its toll on your vehicle. In Alberta, we often see claims that relate to wind or rain damage.
Strong gusts may rip off the awnings of your RV, which can cost you thousands of dollars to fix. An RV insurance policy will cover the costs of claims like these.
